Royce Andrew Powell passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at Columbia Basin Care Facility in The Dalles, Ore.

Royce was born March 30, 1920 in New Castle, Penn. to Charles and Viola (Weatherby) Powell. He was 94 years of age when he passed.

A Celebration of Life with Military Honors was held on Tuesday, July 15 at Anderson’s Tribute Center Reception Room in Hood River.

Private inurnment was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

He grew up in Pennsylvania and in his youth he took flight training, lead trail rides at the Bonnieview Riding Academy and played sand lot baseball.

Royce enlisted in the Army in the fall of 1941. In his career life Royce worked in sales of trees, hearing aids, greeting cards, insurance, copperware, candy but to support his family he was an in-store butcher and was a member of the meat cutters union

He married Naomi Kimmell March 23, 1946 at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Ellwood City, Penn.

Royce enjoyed creating scroll, saw art, wood carving, jogging, horseback riding and had a special interest in baseball. He worked to support his family and was beholden to no one.

Those that knew him will remember his sense of humor, his compassion for animals and the love he had for his wife.

Royce is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughters Paula Slevin and spouse Michael Slevin of Beaver, Penn.; Janna Ferguson of Lyle, Wash.; granddaughter Katie Pierce and spouse David, great grandson Dahmon McCoy, great grandson Alec McCoy, and great grandson Andrew Pierce, all of Concord, North Carolina.

He was met on the other side by his wife Naomi, his son-in-law Terry Ferguson, son William, sisters Jeanette Gallager and Glenola Buquo.

Memorials are encouraged to be made in Royce’s name to Alzheimer’s Research.

Arrangements were under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) in Hood River.
