Standards and procedures for hiring an interim superintendent for the Salem-Keizer School District were approved by the School Board on Tuesday. (See related story).

Superintendent Sandy Husk will resign in January to become chief executive officer of the San Diego-based nonprofit AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). The board hopes to hire her permanent successor in June 2014.

The interim superintendent would have to have:

• Licensure to serve as a superintendent in Oregon.

• Experience as a superintendent or assistant superintendent of an Oregon public school district, including experience with budget preparation and contract negotiations with employee organizations.

• Knowledge about the Salem-Keizer district, including the governance model, strategic plan and implementation of Common Core standards.

The vacancy will be extensively advertised, and the public will have the opportunity to comment on hiring standards, criteria and the hiring procedure, all of which the board will adopt at a public meeting.

Mary Paulson, district chief of staff, will receive candidates’ resumes, and the board will hold two executive sessions, the first to review resumes and select candidates to interview, the second to interview and consider which candidate to hire.
