The Whiteaker Middle School eighth grade A team continued its undefeated romp through league competition with a 5-0 win over Claggett Creek Middle School Monday, Oct. 28.
The Wolverines were 9-0 after the win with only one game left to play vs. Stevens Middle School Wednesday, Oct. 30, past press time.
“We’ve been really good at communicating and coming together during the matches,” said Whiteaker’s Bailey Torres.
Claggett’s Faith Jauregui agreed. Faith had to face down some of her teammates in a club league with Whiteaker on the other side of the net.
“They were playing a little slow for my liking. They generally pass the ball really well and that opens up the rest of the game,” said Coach Scott Coburn. “They have size, too, and they use it well.”
The team only struggles when they’re not moving around the court, he added.
Wolverine Haley Debban said that’s what heppened when the team had to fight for a 3-2 win over Straub Middle School earlier this season.
“They got all the balls over and it was the one time when we weren’t prepared,” Haley said.
Both girls were eager for the opportunity to transition into the Celtic volleyball program next year.
“I’m looking forward to the higher level of competition,” Bailey said.
Haley was excited because she already knows some of the coaches.
“They are a really nice group of students and they’ll represent McNary well if they choose to move on in volleyball,” Coburn said.
