Two passengers in a Volvo station wagon were taken to Salem Hospital Friday morning after the car they were riding in slammed into a tree on Sam Orcutt Way NE, at the Bi-Mart parking lot.

Lt. Lance Inman said the driver did not appear to have injuries. A third passenger in the car walked away when medics from the Keizer Fire District arrived, Inman said.

“He was eastbound on Sam Orcutt Way and claimed to have swerved to avoid something that ran out in front of him,” Inman said of the driver.

The blue Volvo 940 wagon was eastbound and slammed head-on into a tree. Inman said the two transported passenger were conscious and appeared to have non-life threatening injuries with lacerations and complaints of pains.

No other vehicles were involved.

It was a busy morning for Keizer emergency personnel. Earlier in the day, firefighters responded to a fire in a hazelnut silo at Gnome Hazelnut Factory at 7505 Windsor Island Road N around 6 a.m.

About 200,000 pounds of nuts were in the silo. Complicating the process of getting the nuts out was the conveyor belt being lost in the fire. The fire was declared a total loss by the KFD at $320,000.
