Relentless offense through the first three quarters of a game with McKay Royal Scots earned the McNary varsity football team a 48-6 win, and a guaranteed berth in the state playoffs.
The teams met at McNary High School Friday, Oct. 18.
“They did what they were supposed to do. They played really good team defense and moved the ball up and down the field without making many mistakes,” said McNary Coach Ted Anagnos, who was filling the shoes of McNary Head Coach Isaac Parker. Parker was absent from the gridiron Friday while recuperating from neck surgery, but is expected to return this week.
McNary was first on the board less than two minutes into the game on a drive highlighted by an Andrew Lawrence run, completions from quarterback Hayden Gosling to David Gonzalez and Kyle Torres, and a two-yard touchdown run by Brett Hildebrand. McNary led 7-0 after a successful point-after by Hayden McCowan.
Three drives later McKay was working on a second-and-seven attempt when a high snap was recovered by Lawrence after it slipped through the hands of Perry Groves. It took Hildebrand only two plays to strike again and give McNary the 14-0 lead.
