It’s not everything originally envisioned, but a portion of the Chemawa Road construction project has been wrapped up.

The entire portion of Chemawa Road NE to Keizer Rapids Park was supposed to be done this summer and fall, including widening around the entrance to McNary High School at Celtic Way North and putting in a traffic light there.

As previously mentioned in the Keizertimes, the entire project will not be completed this year. The portion to the west of Windsor Island Road N was finished last week, but portion east of there won’t be done until next year. The roadwork is an Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) project.

Bill Lawyer, Public Works director for Keizer, gave a brief update during the Sept. 16 Keizer City Council meeting and gave more details Sept. 19.

“The paving west of Windsor Island was completed today,” Lawyer said Sept. 19. “The street and sidewalks are done. Plantings are to be done by the end of October.”

Lawyer said “unacceptable sections” of new sidewalks, including a broken curb and gutter on the 1100 block at Loren’s Sanitation, will be replaced.

Less work is being completed east of Windsor.

“East of Windsor, the contractor will be going to Crater Avenue with curbs, sidewalks and drain facilities,” Lawyer said. “But the street will not be paved. They will patch asphalt together and come back to finish the work in the spring. They will pave there once school is done.”

Lawyer noted the project contract calls for no work to be done before June 1, but he expects work to resume on or near that date.

“The last couple of weeks (of the school year) the school has a lighter load,” he said. “Seniors are leaving early and have finals. It’s not the standard school days, so it’s OK to have that activity at that time.”
