The McNary High School boys varsity soccer team notched its first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over the West Albany High School Bulldogs.

The teams met at McNary Thursday, Sept. 12. The Celtics were coming off a pair of losses in their opening games and those prompted a change in formation.

“We went to a 3-5-2 formation that loaded the midfield. It worked pretty well,” said Miguel Camarena, McNary head coach. “I’m happy with how they played.”

Senior Alex Fox said the change gave the team more opportunities to score. Fox was first to the net in the early going that gave McNary a 1-0 lead.

“I just saw a teammate with the ball and I knew he was going send it across. I ran to the far post, saw it coming my way and jumped up to head it in,” Fox said. The assist came from the foot of Brayan Ayala.

With 10 minutes left in the half, the Bulldogs tied the game, but McNary’s Mario Garibay netted the go-ahead goal at the 45-minute mark on an assist by Bryan Keo.
