William A. Mulligan (Bill) of Newberg passed away Aug. 5, 2013 at the age of 90, surrounded by his children.
He was born June 2, 1923, in Chicago, Ill. to William J. Mulligan and Kathryn Moran, where he attended schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was a firefighter on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Enterprise aircraft carrier and was awarded numerous medals for his service.
On Sept. 22, 1945 Bill married Marcella J. Novotny in Salem. They were married for 65 years.
Since 1946, they lived in Salem, Keizer, Corvallis and then Newberg. Bill was a
pipefitter for 42 years, retiring in 1988.
Besides loving his wife and family, Bill was a friendly, hardworking, industrious man who was always willing to help others with plumbing, woodworking or other household projects.
Bill will be greatly missed by his children Carol Young (Dave) of Corvallis, Chris Mulligan (Jim Bellah) of Newberg, Scott Mulligan (Diane) of West Linn and Dan Mulligan (Geneva Lamb) of St. Paul; grandchildren: Kelly Young-Seidel (Andrew), Shannon Martin (Aaron), Tracy Cook (Josh) and Tyler Herigstad; great-grandchildren Jackson Pinion, Brennan Martin, Holden Seidel, Miles Seidel, Jordan Cook and Keira Cook; sister Harriett Philpott and six nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marcella in 2010 and grandson
Zachary Herigstad in 2000.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. at
Avamere Assisted Living Facility, 730 Foothills Drive in Newberg.
