Word to the wise: don’t tell 16-year-old Cassandra Jones that she can’t do something. She’s apt to prove you wrong.

For proof, look no further than the $5,000 Jones raised in five months to take part in a musicians tour of Europe in July. Jones, a clarinet player in the McNary High School band, was recommended for the trip by band director Jennifer Bell and attended a Voyageurs International informational session last June to find out more.

“They tell you about all the cool things students do on the trips, then they tell you the cost and that there’s a $500 downpayment to reserve a spot,” Jones said.

Against the wishes of her stepdad, Jones put down the money and went to work.

“I was doing a lot of yard work and my grandmother and I did a bake sale every Sunday afternoon after church. We even took orders for a couple of months and we made a lot through those,” Jones said.

She collected the needed funds by the November deadline and attended a camp earlier this summer where participants from throughout Oregon auditioned for their roles in the Europe-bound group. Jones’ woodwind ability earned her first chair, the place of honor in her section, and all the accompanying solos.
