As it stands now, code enforcement in Keizer is reactive.

City officials would love to be proactive.

Shane Witham, in charge of code enforcement for the city, gave an update during a Keizer City Council work session Monday evening along with Nate Brown, director of Community Development.

Despite cutbacks in recent years – including the layoff of former code enforcement director Tony Casker due to budget cuts – and remaining staff having to pick up additional duties, Brown said the core work is still being done.

“We have heard we’re not doing code enforcement today; that’s not true,” Brown said. “We are. We’re very much doing code enforcement today.”

Witham estimated he gets 80 to 85 percent voluntarily compliance for fixing code compliance issues.
