When Steve Holgate dons the beard and top hat of the United States’ 16th president, he knows the audience is struck by the at times uncanny resemblance to the Great Emancipator, but he’s hoping they’re just as in tune with what he has to say.
“The real truth isn’t a detail of dress, it’s who he really was, which is the far more important thing,” said Holgate, who will be appearing as Abraham Lincoln Sunday, July 7, as part of the finale to the Northwest Civil War Council’s reenactments at Willamette Mission Park.
Holgate said he will be reviewing the Union troops and mingling with them before a “presidential press conference” slated at 1 p.m.
“I will speak to the audience for about 25 minutes and then open it up to questions,” he said. “The re-enactors are great because they know so much about the time period and it makes for great questions.”
Holgate assumed the mantle of Lincoln after taking early retirement from the Foreign Service as a state department officer.
