When Jim Campbell opened JC’s Pizzaria, he didn’t know much about the pizza business.

Evidently, he learned something along the way.

JC’s, located at 4200 River Road N, is celebrating its 30th anniversary on July 1. The family-run pizza joint is having a 30 percent off sale July 1 to 4.

“I’m totally amazed,” Jim said of reaching 30 years. “I knew nothing about the pizza business.”

Dave Walery, who opened Walery’s Premium Pizza in Salem around the same time, helped Jim get his place going. Soon, the two had a friendly battle going.

“We started the local pizza wars,” Jim said with a wide grin. “It was February 1984. We had a $3.99 pizza.”

There have been changes over the years, such the door off Cherry Avenue being closed off, new floors and lighting, plus chicken and the salad bar no longer being offered.

Jim said the key to 30 years in business is simple.

“Good product, good price and hard work,” he said.

In Jim’s case, having family help out has also been a key.
