The McNary High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps was called upon to fill some rather large shoes on Memorial Day, May 27.

When members of the National Guard had to pull out of a memorial ceremony in honor of fallen servicemen and women at the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs, the Celtics stepped up to fill the hole.

Five McNary students took part in the ceremony by posting the colors and retiring them. Keizer’s Capt. David Parker, U.S. Marine Corps, played “Taps.”

Each year on Memorial Day new names are added to the memorial adjacent to the ODVA office. This year, only one, Capt. James D. Niehl, was added. Representatives of the ODVA read the names of the soldiers killed in action as part of the Armed Forces contingents in Iraq and Afghanistan. Keizer’s Pfc. Ryan J. Hill was among those honored.
