It’s not uncommon for the contestants in the Distinguished Young Women of Keizer scholarship program to be labeled as “pageant girls,” but the stereotypes associated with such a label couldn’t be further from the truth, said Michelle Nelson.
“For the past few weeks everyone has been calling me a pageant girl, but it’s not like that. We were all really happy to be doing it and we were all backstage signing each other’s programs,” Nelson said.
Nelson and Alexandra “Lexi” Price were named the 2013-14 Distinguished Young Women of Keizer at the scholarship program held Saturday, May 11, at McNary High School.
Price, who claimed several of the individual scholarships in addition to the DYWK title, said the process of preparing for the program was the culmination of an effort to push herself outside her comfort zone.
