Ron Christopher is one of two people running for a spot on the Keizer Fire District board.
Meanwhile, no one is officially running for the Salem-Keizer Transit subdistrict No. 2 seat Christopher has held since May 2009.
“I’m going to miss being on the transit board,” said Christopher, husband of longtime Keizer mayor Lore Christopher. “I’ve had an excellent time. We got a lot done, like the upcoming Keizer Transit Station. I will miss that very much.”
On the other hand, being involved with a fire department has somewhat been in Christopher’s blood.
“I have always wanted to be on the fire board,” he said. “My uncle was the fire chief in Redmond, Ore. for 35 years. My dad was a volunteer in Redmond for that long. I’ve been around EMTs or firemen most of my life.”
Christopher said there’s a simple reason to run for the fire board now.
“It’s been talked about for a while,” he said. “I was asked by some current board members of Keizer Fire to do it.”
Christopher, who has been treasurer for the transit board, is competing against John Rizzo in the May 21 election.
No one filed by the deadline for the transit seat, meaning potential candidates are having to run as write-in candidates.
