McNary’s Gary Gao started down 4-0 in the first set of his singles match with a West Salem High School opponent last week, but he was far from out.
“I was too impatient at the beginning of the match, and I didn’t settle down until after I talked with Coach (Lisa) Reid,” Gao said.
After that talk, Gao surged back to win six consecutive games and the set. He won the next set 6-2 to take the match.
Gao was the only Celt to pick up a win in singles action as the Celtics lost 5-3.
McNary picked up two wins in doubles with Aaron Wenning and John Reid dominating in 6-1 and 6-3 sets. Zach Staley and Jose Loureda Barranco won in sets of 6-2 and 6-3.
“Aaron and I were both staying focused and kept composed through the match and I think we’re going to be sticking together as a doubles team,” Reid said. “Both of our matches last week were good practice, but the South Salem match was a little more competitive.”
