A shortfall of about $17.7 million is estimated for the 2013-14 budget of the Salem-Keizer School District, superintendent Sandy Husk told the budget committee Tuesday.

The proposed budget totals $563,891,655, of which 65 percent is the general fund. Husk focused her presentation Tuesday on the general fund.

Referring to a chart that showed what she called “the trauma of 2011-12,” when the budget was more than $50 million below the current service level, Husk noted that the 2013-14 deficit is much less but still involves a need for cuts.
