The need hasn’t stopped.

As such, plans are moving forward to expand Simonka Place, the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) shelter at 5119 River Road N that serves homeless women and children.

Simonka Place has a capacity of 50 beds. Since January 2012, the facility has been averaging more than 60 women and children a night.

“It’s sad to see anyone in need of a safe and warm place to sleep denied shelter due to over capacity,” UGM president and CEO Mike Rideout said. “It’s even more difficult when that population is women and children.”

Kyle Dickinson, vice president of advancement at UGM, said that led to a decision last fall to expand capacity at Simonka Place. The $695,000 project will add more than 4,400 square feet and boost capacity by 60 percent, to 82 beds.
