There are a couple of things that set Joe DeWitt apart from his teammates on the McNary High School wrestling team, but none have anything to do with his developmental disabilities.

“It’s really cool because when we talk about a match on the side of the mat, we’ll end up talking about how whoever is out there needing to do this move that we’ve practiced that week, then Joe goes out on the match and just does it,” said Celt Rob Phelps, one of DeWitt’s teammates. “A lot of people who don’t see success in the first few weeks bail and Joe just sticks with it.”

DeWitt has not been part of the regular line-up in the McNary mat men, but he’s never far from their side.
