If Katie Ernst ever needs someone to try out items at her store, she has just the person on site.

Ernst has 2-year-old son Zane with her as she operates Mother Goose Resale,.

Another Mother Goose, which was further north on River Road, closed earlier this year.

Prior to opening her consignment shop focused on clothing for children, Ernst ran a Mother Goose in West Salem.

“I wasn’t doing too well at the other location,” Ernst said. “I get a lot more people in here. There have been less sales, but there’s also no sign yet. The building was also empty for more than a year, so people got used to driving right by it.”

Ernst noted has had more consigners in her new location.

“That means new customers as well,” she said. “I also sent fliers to all the daycare facilities I could find.”

Ernst admits she wouldn’t have been browsing Mother Goose stores if not for the birth of her son.

“I was at a West Salem clinic and would stop in the Mother Goose down the street on my break,” she said. “I noticed on Craigslist one day a Mother Goose franchisee was for sale.”

Since her space is less than 900 square feet, Ernst doesn’t have two racks like she would want. Because of that, Ernst doesn’t have maternity clothes in her store.

Zane does his part by playing with children who come in.

“He learns to share fast,” Ernst said.
