Whiteaker Middle instructional assistant arrested for sexually abusing minors

A Whiteaker Middle School instructional assistant was arrested Wednesday on seven counts of sexual abuse.

Keizer Police were notified of a Department of Human services investigation and arrested the suspect on allegations of fondling three male juveniles at both his workplace and his home.

According to a probable cause statement from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect admitted to inappropriately touching children in both 2010 and 2011 at the school, and to another incident at his home.

Arrested was Jose Juan Moreno, 45, of Salem, for six counts of sex abuse in the first degree and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. He was arraigned on the charges Wednesday.

Police said the victims’ parents have been notified and authorities do not believe there are more victims at this point. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Det. Tim Lathrop at 503-390-3713 ext. 3481.

Moreno has been employed as a special needs instructional assistant at Whiteaker Middle School since September of 2008 and served in a similar role at Clear Lake Elementary School for the last three months of the 2007-08 school year. He is on paid administrative leave, said Jay Remy, a spokesman for Salem-Keizer Schools.
